Bringing a newborn into the family is an incredibly special time, filled with joy, wonder, and a flurry of activity. One of the best ways to capture these precious early moments is through a newborn photoshoot. While many professional studios offer pristine settings, there is a unique charm and many benefits to conducting your newborn photoshoot at home, especially when older siblings and the family dog are involved. Here’s I LOVE lifestyle newborn photos and how to make the most of it.
1. Comfort and Convenience
Familiar Surroundings: Newborns, older siblings, and pets are all more relaxed in familiar environments. Your home provides a comfortable setting where everyone can be themselves, leading to more genuine and heartwarming photos.
No Travel Hassles: Packing up a newborn, not to mention siblings and a pet, can be a logistical challenge. An at-home photoshoot eliminates the need for travel, reducing stress and allowing the family to focus on enjoying the moment.
2. Personal Touch and Unique Backgrounds
Personalized Setting: Your home is filled with your family’s unique personality. Whether it’s the nursery you lovingly prepared, the cozy corner where you read bedtime stories, or the backyard where your dog loves to play, these settings add a deeply personal touch to your photos.
Natural Interactions: At home, it’s easier to capture natural interactions and candid moments. Siblings can play with their new baby brother or sister in their favorite spots, and your dog can join in, making the photos more lively and genuine.
3. Flexibility and Timing
Adaptable Schedule: Newborns are unpredictable, and their needs come first. At home, you can take breaks for feeding, changing, or soothing your baby without the pressure of studio time limits. This flexibility ensures that the photoshoot is a positive experience for everyone involved. I always tell clients that we are moving on the baby's schedule. It's also why I say newborn sessions take 1.5-3 hours because it really just depends on the baby.
4. Involving Older Siblings and Pets
Comfort for Siblings: Older siblings may feel more at ease and willing to participate in the photoshoot in their home environment. They can show off their favorite toys or read a book to the baby, creating endearing and authentic moments. Then when they need a break, they are safe and able to take one.
Including Pets: Your family dog is an integral part of your household and deserves a spot in these cherished memories. At home, your pet is more likely to be calm and cooperative, leading to adorable shots of your furry friend with the new baby.
Tips for a Successful At-Home Newborn Photoshoot
Plan Ahead: Choose the rooms and settings you’d like to use and make sure they are tidy (I always say "faux clean" which means we move everything out of the photo) and well-lit. Soft, natural light works best, so I always come and look for rooms with large windows.
Keep it Simple: Focus on capturing the connections between family members rather than elaborate setups. Simple, uncluttered backgrounds will keep the attention on the subjects.
Prepare Older Siblings and Pets: Explain to older children what will happen during the photoshoot and involve them in the process. Ensure your pet is well-fed, walked, and calm before starting.
Use Props Sparingly: Personal items like a favorite blanket, a cherished toy, or a family heirloom can add special touches without overwhelming the scene. I'm not a prop heavy photographer, but I do love incorporating special items into the photography sessions.
Be Patient: Be prepared for breaks and go with the flow, capturing spontaneous moments as they happen.
An lifestyle newborn photoshoot with older siblings and the family pets offer a unique opportunity to capture the true essence of your growing family. The comfort, personalization, and flexibility of a home setting create a relaxed atmosphere where genuine interactions can shine through. By planning ahead and embracing the natural dynamics of your household, you can create timeless memories that will be cherished for years to come.
