You’ve planned your family photos for weeks—outfits are picked, the kids are (somewhat) excited, and you’re dreaming of golden sunlight streaming through the trees. And then… the weather decides to do its own thing. Dark clouds roll in, the wind picks up, maybe there’s even a little drizzle. Cue the panic, right?
Not so fast! Some of the most magical, emotional, and downright gorgeous family photos happen when the weather isn’t perfect. Trust me, I’ve seen it all—surprise rain showers, moody skies, even gusty winds that sent hats flying—and I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. Let me tell you why unpredictable weather might just be your session’s secret weapon.
First, let’s talk about clouds. Overcast skies might seem like a disappointment when you were hoping for sun, but in reality, they create the most dreamy, even lighting. No harsh shadows, no squinting—just soft, natural beauty. Plus, cloudy skies can add such a cozy, intimate vibe to your photos. It’s like nature’s own giant softbox, making everything look stunningly effortless. (Yes, I know if you have dreams of that golden light pouring over you we may talk postponing but we don't HAVE to just for clouds)
Then there’s wind. I get it—no one wants their perfectly styled hair flying in all directions, but hear me out. A little breeze can add so much movement and life to your images. Flowing dresses, windswept hair, kids laughing as they chase a runaway hat—these are the kind of candid moments that make for unforgettable photos. The wind tells a story, and sometimes that story is pure magic.
And what about rain? I know, rain can feel like the ultimate session-ruiner and here in Florida it can postpone a session, but some of my favorite sessions have been in a light drizzle! Think about it—moms and dads pulling their kids in close, huddled under an umbrella, giggling as raindrops fall around them. There’s something so romantic and real about it. And if the rain lets up? Hello, glistening landscapes and dewy magic! Not to mention, there’s always the possibility of a rainbow making a surprise guest appearance. 🌈 Worst case scenario, we plan another day to finish the session and you get 2 sessions for one!
So what’s the takeaway? Weather surprises can actually be a gift in disguise. They add mood, movement, and authenticity to your photos. And if you’re willing to embrace the unexpected, you might just walk away with some of the most breathtaking, emotional images you’ve ever seen.
So the next time the forecast looks iffy, don’t stress—I’ve got you. We’ll make magic no matter what the skies decide to do. And who knows? That stormy, windy, or drizzly session might just turn out to be your favorite one yet. ☁️❤️📷
This sweet family embraced it all! We started at sunrise on the beach, then when the rain became more than a drizzle and ruined our plans, we met at a different location the next day for golden evening light. Granted the bugs then showed up and moved us along quickly, but looking at these photos you would never know.
